Fractions and Decimals

Follow the steps while keeping the calculator open in another tab.

Fractions are a frequent source of calculator confusion. This guide explains practical ways to enter fractions, convert between fractions and decimals, and understand why parentheses matter.

Quick tip: Keep the calculator page open in another tab while reading this guide. Try each step immediately so the button sequence becomes familiar.

Entering fractions

Use the fraction template when available, or enter division with parentheses. For example, one-half can be entered as 1/2.

For longer expressions, parentheses prevent ambiguity. Write (2+3)/(4+5) instead of relying on visual interpretation.

Decimals to fractions

Many TI-84-style workflows include a fraction conversion command. After calculating a decimal, use the conversion option to display a fractional form when possible.

Not every decimal has a simple-looking fraction. Rounded decimals may convert to unexpected fractions because the displayed value may not be the exact stored value.

Mixed numbers

Mixed numbers combine a whole number and a fraction. Some calculators have a mixed number template; otherwise convert to an improper fraction before entering.

For example, 2 1/3 is the same as 7/3. Improper fractions are usually safer for typed calculator input.

Parentheses with fractions

Fraction bars group values visually, but typed slash division does not always group the way students expect.

Use parentheses around numerators and denominators when each side contains more than one term. This is especially important in algebra and rational expressions.

Checking answers

Convert a fraction to a decimal to check magnitude. A negative sign, missing parenthesis or reversed numerator/denominator can change the answer dramatically.

When showing work for class, write both the exact fraction and decimal approximation if your teacher allows it.

one half1/2
negative one half(-1)/2
two plus three over four plus five(2+3)/(4+5)
mixed number 2 and 1/37/3
